Howie

His mission - to fill a very big labrador-shaped hole in our hearts. He's filling it with pee.

D&J (And David B.)

D and I kept each other awake through psych100. When she pointed out a certain boy in first year biology, and asked did I think he was hot, I said something like, "J? Huh? Hot?", and she said, "What, you know him?", and I said, "Yeah, we went to high school together." So I was recruited to make some stupid excuse to go to his apartment, and she would tag along, they'd hit it off, get married and live happily ever after. Or something like that. Ten minutes into our visit, they disappeard into his kitchen to bond over sunflower seeds and beer. I spent the evening in his living room, listening to J's remarkable record collection.

And that's how I discovered David Bowie.

F

A 14-year-old kid with a mumble and a bad attitude, his foster parents bought a calf to teach him responsibility. Daily, he rode his bike out of town to the barn to look after his charge. Fed it, watered it, bonded with it. At the end of the summer, stronger, browner, healthier than he'd ever been, he could state clearly to anyone who would listen - when he grew up, he wasn't gonna be no fuckin' farmer.

The first three pics were taken onboard the Mar II. The rope celtic knot mat lying on the deck, and the lengths of rope wrapped around the wooden thingies (try not to be intimidated by my nautical terminology), just struck me as pretty. Found poetry for a non-poet.

The third is Halifax, viewed from the Harbour. That's Georges Island in the foreground with the lighthouse, Halifax in the background. It would be better if I had a 3-D camera, in the photo one blends in with the other.

The last is back in Peggy's cove. The seagulls in Nova Scotia are huge compared to their Ontario cousins. I assumed this fellow wanted his picture taken, posing like that, so I obliged. I have another shot of him but not so close-up, because I was more interested in the boats than the bird. Are they dories? I'm not sure, but the boats I saw in NS were all working boats - wooden, weather-beaten, looking like they earn their keep. I see lots of boats on the lake, mostly leisure craft. Fiberglass. So different from these ones.
